Park Hyo Shin - Home
I admit. From the start of the music video, I was afraid that this was going to be one of those narratives which romanticizes a "foreign" culture. I was slightly on the edge, afraid that one of my favourite songs in Park Hyo Shin’s new album would be ruined by an insensitivite or cliché narrative. When the little boy ran off from the performance and was confronted by bullies, I was afraid that Park Hyo Shin was going to appear and become the hero.
But I'm glad that the presumptions I had throughout watching this video did not render through. A scene from the flashback near the end did glimpse into Park Hyo Shin “protecting” the boy from the bullies, but accompanied with other scenes of their friendship, the overall narrative of the video doesn’t really place the singer as a “benevolent helper." Along with the artist Jung Jae-Il, who is also the co-producer of the song, the video portrays the three as friends who have come together for their passion for music.
Watching the music video another time (after breaking away from my presumptions), I began to notice the high quality of the video. I wouldn’t say the story is anything particularly fresh or new, but the passion of the three “artists” leaves a smile. This music video is part of a “Block Movie” series which will take 2/3 of the songs in the I am A Dreamer album and turn it into one short film. Produced by Director Jang Jae-Hyuk, who was also in charge of Park Hyo Shin’s “Wild Flower,” I can’t wait to see the film when it comes out next month, especially since each and every song in this album is so beautiful.
“It’s like walking on clouds
To live an uncertain life
One step, one step that we will take
I won’t let go of your hands”
I fell in love with this song the first time I listened to the album. I immediately feel calm, relaxed, from the strumming on the piano right at the beginning. As instruments enter into the space, they work in such beautiful harmony with Park Hyo Shin’s powerful vocal. When the chorus - “And I fly high / I’m in sky high / 너를 안고서” - starts, I get a surge of emotions, as if I’m escaping from every negativities which has boggled me down, and running against the chilly wind, towards hope, a dream.
I feel so free. I can feel the warmth holding me. I feel so alive.
If you are there besides me”
“Even in this moment, the world is changing
Inside of you
Images of you and I are changing
Even if I’m walking today, I want to run tomorrow
If you are there besides me”
I feel so safe within the lyrics, the voice, and the harmony of the instruments.
