윤종신, 정인 - 오르막길 // Yoon Jong-Shin, Jung-In - Uphill Road

This song came out in 2012 as part of Yoon Jong-Shin’s ongoing Monthly Project which every month he produces a song (sometimes two) and often through collaborations with other artists. I’ve heard this song before, but it came back on my radar after seeing an episode of Fantastic Duo where Yoon Jong-Shin and a chosen contestant sang this song in an amazing performance. Seeing the performance really brought out the incredible emotions embedded within the lyrics of the song.

I’m a huge fan of Yoon Jong-Shin and his songs. His lyrics contain a narrative rendered in a lyrical manner, and contain an honesty which touches on the intimate emotions and feelings. His Monthly Project is an experimental project which explores varieties of genres and aesthetic for accompanied music videos. The diversity of themes, effects and genres sparks an interest and desire to anticipate what will be next. I truly love and respect the effort he puts into this project, especially since he has committed to this for the last five or so years.

한걸음 이제 한걸음 일 뿐
아득한 저 끝은 보지마
평온했던 길처럼 계속 나를 바라봐줘
그러면 견디겠어

One step, just one more step
Don’t look at the end of the road
Just like the tranquil road, keep looking at me
Then I can endure it

This song isn’t your typical optimistic, joyful, “get up and have hope” narrative. This song isn't to throw an aimless hopeful message that everything'll be alright despite the hardships ahead of you. Rather, it tells you that, yes, it will be difficult and that thrill of accomplishment is far ahead, so hold strong. The song isn't to romanticize your struggle and of life, but a reminder of the true reality. And it gives a nice part on your back and lets you know you're not alone on the path.

Jung In’s raspy voice adds depth to the lyrics, while Cho Jung-Chi's guitar arrangement grounds her voice, eventually embracing it. Although this song was written for and with her in mind, I do really love Yoon Jong-Shin's version.
